The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Court Remands Sowore
The ruling came during an ongoing defamation case involving President Bola Tinubu. The judge directed that he remain in custody until the next hearing.
Allegations and defence arguments
Prosecutors from the Department of State Services accused Sowore of cyberstalking and criminal defamation. The charges stem from social media posts that allegedly targeted President Tinubu.
Sowore denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. His legal team also asked the judge to withdraw from the case, but the request was rejected.
The defence further raised concerns about earlier bail proceedings. Prosecutors argued that Sowore failed to appear for a scheduled hearing, which contributed to delays in the trial.
Remand decision and public reaction
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court remands Sowore order and sent him to Kuje prison pending the continuation of the trial.
The case has sparked public debate across Nigeria, especially around free speech and political criticism. Supporters of Sowore claim the case is politically motivated, while prosecutors insist it is purely legal.
Legal analysts say the trial could influence how courts handle defamation cases involving public figures and online statements.

The court has adjourned proceedings for continuation, with both sides expected back for further hearing. Attention remains on the case as it continues to draw national interest.
