Nigeria’s 36 state governors have renewed their call for the creation of state police. They insist that the new security system must have strong constitutional backing. They also want clear safeguards to prevent abuse of power.
The governors made this position known after a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). They said Nigeria must reform its policing structure to reflect current security realities. In addition, they stressed that any new system must align with the country’s federal arrangement.
Furthermore, the NGF revealed that it reviewed reports from its secretariat and state Attorneys-General. These reports focused on ongoing consultations for constitutional amendments. The goal is to clearly define how state police will be established and managed.
The governors also insisted that accountability must guide the proposed system. Therefore, they called for clear rules on funding, command structure, and jurisdiction. They added that citizens’ rights must remain fully protected.
Meanwhile, the forum also considered wider national reforms. These included plans to improve the power sector. They also discussed decentralised energy solutions to boost electricity supply across states.
In addition, the governors reaffirmed their readiness to work with the federal government. They said cooperation is necessary to strengthen national security and improve governance outcomes.
As stated in daily post, concerns remain about possible political misuse of state police. There are also fears about uneven funding across states. Still, support for decentralised policing continues to grow as insecurity worsens nationwide.
