Former aide to Atiku Abubakar, Aliyu Bin Abbas, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
His emergence places him among the politicians expected to challenge incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other contenders in the race for the country’s highest office.
Abbas Secures ADP Presidential Ticket
Abbas was selected as the party’s flagbearer during the ADP’s presidential nomination process. The former Atiku aide accepted the nomination and pledged to lead a campaign focused on national development, youth participation and inclusive governance.
According to reports, he vowed to mobilise young people and women across the country as part of efforts to build support ahead of the 2027 election.
Fresh Contest Takes Shape Ahead of 2027
The development adds another name to Nigeria’s growing list of presidential hopefuls as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general election. President Tinubu is expected to seek re-election, while opposition parties continue to position themselves for the contest.
Political analysts believe the emergence of new candidates could further reshape alliances and campaign strategies as parties intensify preparations for the election season.
What It Means for the Opposition
Abbas’ candidacy gives the ADP an early presence in the presidential race and could attract voters seeking alternatives to the major political parties. His background as a former aide to Atiku may also place him under close scrutiny as campaigns begin to take shape.
With the 2027 election drawing closer, attention is expected to focus on how smaller parties such as the ADP plan to compete against established political forces led by Tinubu and other opposition figures.
