Peter Obi Shares Personal Experience With Ethnic Bias, Tells Fulani Community: ‘I Understand Your Pain’

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has opened up about his personal encounters with ethnic prejudice, saying those experiences have given him a better understanding of the challenges faced by many Fulani people in Nigeria.

Obi made the remarks while speaking on the need for national unity and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

According to him, growing up and living as an Igbo man has exposed him to stereotypes and unfair assumptions, a reality he says many Nigerians from different backgrounds can relate to.

Peter Obi Reflects on Years of Stereotyping

The former Anambra governor said one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges is the tendency to judge entire communities based on the actions of a few individuals.

Obi noted that he has often witnessed people make sweeping judgments about Igbos, just as many Fulani people are sometimes unfairly profiled because of the actions of criminal elements within society.

He said such experiences have helped him appreciate the emotional burden that comes with being viewed through the lens of ethnicity rather than individual character.

“Because I have suffered stereotypes as an Igbo man, I understand your pain,” Obi said while addressing concerns about ethnic discrimination.

Calls for a More United Nigeria

Obi stressed that Nigerians must move away from narratives that promote division and suspicion among ethnic groups.

He argued that lasting peace and national development can only be achieved when citizens learn to see one another as individuals rather than representatives of ethnic labels.

According to him, no group should be condemned because of the actions of a few people, adding that fairness and justice must remain the foundation of a united nation.

‘We Must Build Bridges, Not Walls’

The former presidential candidate also urged Nigerians to embrace empathy and dialogue, especially at a time when ethnic tensions and political differences continue to dominate public discussions.

Obi maintained that the country’s strength lies in its diversity and called on leaders and citizens alike to promote understanding instead of deepening divisions.

His comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians debating the impact of ethnic stereotypes and the need for greater national cohesion.
