Nnamdi Kanu Detention: OYC Warns Tinubu Over 2027 Election Impact

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has warned that the continued detention of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, could have political consequences for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group made this known in Abuja on Tuesday through its National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka. He described Kanu’s arrest, extradition, prosecution, and ongoing detention as “invalid and unconstitutional,” insisting that due process was not followed.

OYC Raises Questions Over Legal Process and Human Rights Concerns

According to Igboayaka, the handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention raises serious questions about justice and human rights in Nigeria.

He argued that the IPOB leader’s extradition from Kenya amounted to what is widely described as extraordinary rendition, a process he claimed violates both Nigerian and international law.

The group also suggested that the situation reflects long-standing political tension in Nigeria, especially around the South-East region and the agitation for Biafra.

Claims of Political Continuity From Buhari to Tinubu Administration

Igboayaka further stated that the case was inherited from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. It was alleged that the current federal government under President Tinubu has continued with what he described as an “illegal trial.”

The continued detention of the IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has remained a sensitive issue in South-East Nigeria, fueling public debate on fairness, justice, and national unity.

He added that the matter is not just legal but also deeply political, as it influences public perception of the federal government of Nigeria.

Comparison With Umaru Dikko Case in UK

To support his position, the OYC president referenced the 1984 attempted abduction of former Nigerian minister Umaru Dikko in the United Kingdom during the military era of Muhammadu Buhari.

He recalled that Dikko was allegedly found inside a diplomatic crate at a London airport after British customs officers discovered irregularities, including missing diplomatic clearance.

The incident later became a major Nigeria-UK diplomatic crisis, leading to arrests and convictions of individuals involved.

Igboayaka argued that unlike the Dikko case, where accountability was enforced internationally, no similar consequences have followed the alleged rendition of Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya.

He claimed this reflects what he described as selective justice in Nigeria’s legal system, especially in cases involving Igbo political figures.

Call for Resolution and Warning Over 2027 Elections

The OYC president warned that if the situation remains unresolved, it could deepen political dissatisfaction in South-East Nigeria.

He stressed that the issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention has gone beyond the courtroom and is now shaping political conversations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, failure to address the matter fairly could affect voter confidence and participation.

He urged the government to consider a transparent and lawful resolution that would help reduce tension and restore trust in Nigeria’s justice system
