June 12 Insecurity Victims Should Be Remembered, Says Shaibu

Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said the June 12 Democracy Day celebration should have focused more on insecurity victims and their families rather than government achievements.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV News, Shaibu said many Nigerians expected the occasion to acknowledge the pain of families affected by kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and other security challenges across the country.

According to him, the struggles of June 12 insecurity victims received little attention despite the growing insecurity facing many communities.

Families Expected More Empathy

Shaibu said families whose loved ones have been kidnapped or killed were hoping to hear words of comfort and support from national leaders.

He expressed disappointment that First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu had not publicly addressed recent abductions involving schoolchildren in parts of Oyo and Borno states.

According to him, many affected families continue to live with fear and uncertainty while waiting for the safe return of their loved ones.

He said many parents have spent weeks grieving, praying, and hoping for good news. At a time like this, he argued, citizens need reassurance and compassion from those in leadership positions.

June 12 Insecurity Victims Deserve Recognition

Shaibu maintained that June 12 insecurity victims should have been at the centre of discussions during the Democracy Day celebration.

He compared the current situation with the response of former First Lady Patience Jonathan during a previous national crisis.

According to him, her famous remark, “There is God o,” resonated with many Nigerians because it reflected genuine concern and empathy.

Shaibu also criticized the distribution of vehicles at the Presidential Villa during the Democracy Day period.

He described the move as insensitive, considering the hardship and suffering many families are currently facing.

Leadership Is About Standing With Citizens

According to Shaibu, leadership is not only about celebrating achievements or presenting statistics. He said leaders must also connect with citizens during difficult times and show support for those facing hardship.

He added that the nation should not forget June 12 insecurity victims while celebrating democracy. Instead, the day should serve as an opportunity to honour those who have suffered from insecurity and reassure affected families that their concerns matter.

Shaibu further stated that if Atiku Abubakar were president, he would have spent the day visiting affected communities in states such as Oyo, Borno, and Yobe. He said such visits would demonstrate solidarity with victims and their families.

Conclusion

Shaibu said Nigerians expect their leaders to stand with citizens during difficult moments. He argued that Democracy Day should not only celebrate political achievements but also remember families affected by insecurity.

According to him, recognizing June 12 insecurity victims would send a strong message that their pain has not been ignored and that the nation stands with them in their time of need.
