Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has said he warned Nigerians before the 2015 general election that Muhammadu Buhari was not the right person to lead the country. He now believes Nigeria’s situation has become even more difficult under President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Saharatv Politics Today, the cleric recalled that he openly shared his concerns before Buhari won the election. At the time, he said many Nigerians disagreed with him. Looking back, he believes the events that followed have justified his warning.
His latest remarks have drawn fresh attention to Oritsejafor on Buhari and Tinubu, with many Nigerians debating his assessment of the country’s leadership.
Oritsejafor explained that he deliberately stayed away from public political discussions after Buhari assumed office. According to him, there was little reason to keep repeating himself because many people had already ignored his earlier message.
He, however, said the hardship facing ordinary Nigerians today made it impossible for him to remain silent. He pointed to the rising cost of living, economic pressure and other challenges affecting millions of families across the country.
The former CAN president also said his calling as a pastor does not stop at preaching inside the church. He believes religious leaders should speak whenever the wellbeing of citizens is at stake. In his view, keeping quiet while people suffer would amount to abandoning that responsibility.
Speaking further, he dismissed suggestions that his criticism of Buhari was influenced by politics or personal relationships. He insisted that his position was based on what he believed was best for Nigeria and not on support for any politician.
The conversation around Oritsejafor on Buhari and Tinubu has continued to generate mixed reactions. While some Nigerians agree with his views, others believe the current administration still deserves more time to tackle the country’s many challenges.
Even so, Oritsejafor maintained that leaders must remain accountable to the people. He said Nigerians expect those in power to improve security, strengthen the economy and make life better for ordinary citizens.
He also urged public officials to pay closer attention to the concerns of the people instead of ignoring growing frustration across the country. According to him, good leadership is measured by the impact it has on citizens’ daily lives.
