Women’s Group Raises Concern Over Exclusion From 2027 Party Primaries

A gender advocacy organisation has expressed concern over what it described as the continued exclusion of women from political party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

The group said many women who are interested in contesting elective positions still face serious challenges within the country’s political system. According to the organisation, political parties have not done enough to create a fair environment that allows female politicians to participate actively in leadership and decision-making processes.

Low Female Representation Worries Group

The organisation noted that women remain underrepresented in Nigerian politics despite years of advocacy for gender inclusion. It argued that most political parties still favour male aspirants during primaries, making it difficult for women to secure party tickets.

The group also pointed out that financial challenges, intimidation, political violence, and cultural beliefs continue to discourage many women from joining politics. It warned that if the situation is not addressed before the 2027 elections, female participation in governance may remain very low.

A representative of the organisation said,“Women are still being pushed aside during political processes despite their contributions to national development. Political parties must create equal opportunities for everyone.”

Call For Equal Opportunities

The advocacy group called on political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders to support policies that encourage equal opportunities for women during party primaries.

It also urged parties to reduce nomination fees for female aspirants and ensure transparent primary elections that give everyone a fair chance.

According to the organisation, increasing women’s participation in politics would help strengthen democracy and improve representation across the country.

The group added that women should not continue to be sidelined as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
