Former President Goodluck Jonathan has sparked fresh conversations online after urging Nigerians to take the 2027 elections more seriously
Jonathan made the statement in a post shared on his verified Instagram page, where he pointed to the large number of Nigerians active on social media compared to the total number of voters recorded in previous elections.
According to him, Nigeria currently has about 47.8 million active social media users and a population estimated at over 242 million people.
However, he noted that the highest number of votes ever recorded in the country’s electoral history stands at just above 42 million.
The former president questioned why millions of Nigerians remain absent during elections despite actively engaging in political discussions online.
“Where are the other 200 million Nigerians? Please, fellow Nigerians, let’s be serious about the 2027 elections,” he wrote.
The post quickly gained attention across social media platforms, with many Nigerians reacting to his comments. Some users agreed with his concerns about voter apathy, while others blamed distrust in the political system for low turnout during elections.
The Instagram post also featured Jonathan alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi inside a luxury vehicle, a photo that further stirred reactions online.
With political conversations already building ahead of 2027, Jonathan’s message has added to growing calls encouraging Nigerians, especially young people, to participate more actively in the electoral process.
