Dozens Dead After Overloaded Boat Capsizes in Sokoto State, Nigeria

At least 47 people died after an overloaded boat carrying farm workers capsized in Sokoto State, north western Nigeria.

A tragic boat accident in north western Nigeria has claimed the lives of at least 47 people after an overloaded wooden vessel flipped over in a river.

The terrible event happened on Thursday, August 20, 2026, near the rural community of Gorau inside the Goronyo local government area of Sokoto State.

Local rescuers, police officers, and emergency workers rushed to the scene to pull survivors from the water, but dozens of passengers, mostly young children and women, tragically drowned before help could reach them.

The boat was carrying more than eighty passengers across the river so local villagers and laborers could get to rice farms for daily work.

During the rainy season, rivers rise quickly, making travel dangerous for rural communities that rely entirely on small wooden boats to reach farmlands and local markets.

Because the boat was carrying far too many people and lacked basic safety items like life jackets, the vessel lost balance in the deep water and tipped over completely.

Confirming the high number of deaths following recovery efforts, police spokesperson Ahmad Rufai stated that officers found 46 bodies near the village.

Giving an updated figure from rescue operations, Abdulkadir Yusuf, the Sokoto state manager at the National Inland Waterways Authority, confirmed that the death toll stood at 47 people “so far”.

The sudden tragedy has left the entire local community in deep shock, with almost every family in the village losing a loved one.

Describing the heavy sorrow hanging over the town, resident Samaila Garba, who lost his young granddaughter in the accident, said he counted at least 42 bodies of victims, predominantly women and children.

Explaining why so many families were on the boat, Samaila Garba added, “You know, during the rainy season, most women and children go to the farm to work”.

Another resident, Aminu Dan Hajiya, expressed grief over how deeply the disaster hit the town, stating, “In fact, almost every household in the community has been affected”.

News reports from outlets note that boat disasters happen frequently across Nigeria because of overloaded vessels, lack of safety checks, and missing life jackets.

Community leaders in Gorau confirmed that over forty victims have already been buried according to local customs while search teams continue looking for missing passengers down the river.

In simple terms, a wooden boat carrying over eighty villagers to their farms tipped over in a river in Sokoto State because it was carrying too many people.

Almost fifty people drowned, mostly women and young children, leaving an entire village in deep mourning.
