Marc Cucurella’s future appeared firmly tied to Chelsea just a few months ago. Now, the Spanish defender is heading back to La Liga after Real Madrid moved quickly to secure one of José Mourinho’s top summer targets, signaling that the club’s rebuilding project is already underway.
Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Spanish international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, handing the left back a six year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2032.
The move marks the first official signing since José Mourinho’s return to Madrid and offers an early glimpse into the type of squad the Portuguese manager wants to build.
While Real Madrid did not disclose the financial details of the deal, multiple reports estimate the transfer package to be worth between €55 million and €60 million.
For many supporters, the signing came as a surprise.
Cucurella had become a key figure at Chelsea after overcoming a difficult start to life in London. The 27 year old developed into one of the club’s most reliable performers, helping Chelsea win the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025 while reestablishing himself as one of Europe’s most respected left backs.
His performances also helped cement his place in the Spanish national team, where he remains an important part of the squad competing at the 2026 World Cup.
The transfer is significant not only because of the player involved, but because of what it says about Real Madrid’s direction under Mourinho.
Unlike some of the club’s historic Galáctico signings, Cucurella arrives primarily because of his tactical qualities rather than marketing appeal.
The Spaniard is known for his relentless work rate, defensive intensity, aggression in duels, and ability to cover large areas of the pitch. Those characteristics have led many observers to describe the transfer as a classic Mourinho signing.
This is not a signing designed to generate headlines. It is a signing designed to solve a football problem.
Real Madrid spent much of last season searching for consistency at left back.
Injuries, form concerns and uncertainty surrounding existing options created a position Mourinho reportedly identified as a priority shortly after agreeing to return to the club. Reports from Spain suggested the Portuguese coach personally pushed for Cucurella after receiving mixed evaluations of other alternatives.

The move also represents a return to Spain for a player who began his career in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before later playing for Eibar and Getafe. After five years in England, first with Brighton and then Chelsea, Cucurella now returns to La Liga with significantly more experience and a much higher profile.
For Chelsea, the transfer closes an important chapter.
The London club originally signed Cucurella in a deal worth more than £60 million after his impressive spell at Brighton. Although his first season was inconsistent, he eventually became one of the team’s leaders and most dependable performers.
Many Chelsea supporters had expected him to remain part of the club’s long term plans.
Instead, the opportunity to return home and play for Real Madrid proved difficult to resist.
Reaction among Madrid supporters has been mixed but increasingly positive.
Some initially questioned the size of the investment for a player approaching his late twenties. Others believe his experience, mentality and reliability make him exactly the type of player the squad needs after a disappointing campaign that ended without major silverware. Community discussions among fans have largely centered on how well Cucurella’s combative style fits Mourinho’s philosophy.
The signing could also be only the beginning.
Reports continue to link Real Madrid with additional defensive reinforcements as Florentino Pérez looks to back Mourinho in the transfer market following his recent re-election as club president. Several high profile names remain under consideration as Madrid attempt to strengthen multiple areas of the squad.
For now, however, the focus belongs to Cucurella.
A player once developed in Barcelona’s academy now finds himself wearing the white shirt of their fiercest rivals.
And as Real Madrid begin a new era under Mourinho, the Spanish defender has become the first major piece of what could be a significant summer rebuild.
