FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has defended his political style, saying those who compare him with his late father have misunderstood the path he chose in life.
Speaking during a media interview, Wike said his father answered the call to serve as a pastor. He, however, chose politics. Because of that decision, he believes people should stop expecting him to behave like a church minister.
According to daily post, he has never presented himself as a pastor or as someone who avoids difficult conversations. He said his job demands honesty and firmness. For that reason, he would rather speak openly than tell people what they want to hear.
Wike explained that many people dislike his blunt remarks because he says exactly what he believes. Nevertheless, he insisted that keeping quiet or making false promises is not his style. He argued that leaders should tell the truth, even when it is unpopular.
The former Rivers State governor also dismissed claims that his outspoken nature is a sign of arrogance. Instead, he said his approach reflects his values and personal convictions. He added that honesty has guided him throughout his years in public office.
Furthermore, Wike maintained that leadership comes with difficult decisions. He said every leader cannot be expected to use the same approach. While some prefer quiet diplomacy, he believes direct communication helps people understand where he stands on important issues.
The minister also noted that politics is different from the pulpit. According to him, both fields require service, but they demand different responsibilities. Therefore, he sees no reason to copy the style of a pastor when his duty is to make political decisions.
His remarks come as political activities continue to build ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike has remained one of the country’s most influential political figures. As a result, his comments often spark debate across party lines and on social media.
Meanwhile, supporters say his frankness sets him apart from many politicians. They argue that he rarely hides his position on national issues. Critics, however, believe his words sometimes create unnecessary controversy. Even so, Wike made it clear that public criticism will not force him to change.
He insisted that people should judge him by his performance in office, not by the profession of his late father. In addition, he said every public official has a unique personality. Trying to make everyone behave the same way, he argued, is unrealistic.
