A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday morning, killing one person and causing widespread panic.
A very strong ground shaking called an earthquake hit the eastern part of Indonesia. The shaking was so big that scientists gave it a rating of 7.7 magnitude. This happens when giant rocks deep under the earth move suddenly, causing the ground above to shake violently.
he big tremor happened early in the morning on Saturday, August 15, 2026, just before 5:00 AM local time. Most people were still in bed sleeping when the earth started moving. The center of the shaking was near the sea floor in a place called the Flores region in East Nusa Tenggara.
Because the ground shook so hard, buildings broke, walls collapsed, and big pieces of concrete fell into the streets. At least one person has been confirmed dead, and several others were hurt when broken pieces of buildings fell on them. In the town of Maumere, a major waiting building near the sea collapsed while people were waiting to board a boat.
Some people even fell into the ocean water when the walking bridge to the ship broke down. Local hospitals also had to carry sick patients outside on their beds because everyone was scared that the hospital roofs might fall on them.
Government rescue teams rushed into the streets to search through broken concrete to make sure no one else was trapped underneath. Emergency workers advised everyone to stay outside and stay away from damaged houses.
The National Disaster Management Agency said in an official statement, “Residents should also avoid entering buildings, especially those that have already sustained cracks or structural damage.” The agency also said, “Following verification and validation by personnel on the ground, the data was revised to one confirmed fatality.”

Many local people described the scene as scary because the land shook for a very long time. A man named Arnold Welianto, who lives in Talibura village, said he was woken up suddenly by the violent shaking. He told reporters that he was asleep when he felt the “very strong shaking.” He added, “I was startled awake and immediately went to my child’s room.”
He also explained that people who lived close to the beach ran to higher ground because the seawater suddenly moved backward away from the land. He stated, “The water remained low for quite some time, so everyone panicked and ran.”
After the ground stopped moving, officials issued an alert warning that large sea waves, called a tsunami, might hit the coast. Thousands of frightened villagers jumped on motorbikes and ran up to mountaintops to save their lives.
However, government weather experts checked the water levels and later told everyone that the danger of a big water wave had passed. Reports from major news outlets and local agencies confirmed that search teams are still checking small villages to help anyone in need.

Even though the worst shaking is over, small tremors called aftershocks are still happening. Because of this, families are choosing to sleep outside on grass fields instead of going back inside their homes.
