65 Year Old Teacher Jailed for Sexually Abusing a Student She Tutored From the Age of 9

Former teacher Deborah Franklin gets seven years in prison for abusing a young boy during private tutoring sessions in the 1990s.

A 65 year old former school teacher named Deborah Franklin has been sent to prison for seven years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young boy in Hertfordshire.

The sentence was handed down after a trial revealed details of abuse that took place decades ago during private home lessons.

The court heard that the abuse happened during the 1990s. At that time, the victim was a young boy between nine and 12 years old.

Franklin was in her 30s, married, and working as a teacher at a local preparatory school. She took on the role of a private tutor to give the boy extra lessons at home.

However, instead of teaching him school subjects, Franklin used her position of trust to repeatedly abuse him. The victim later told the police and the court that he had “no memory of work ever being done” during any of the time they spent together for tutoring.

Court reports showed that the encounters took place in two locations: at the boy’s home and at Franklin’s own house in Radlett. The abuse involved multiple disturbing incidents where Franklin took advantage of the child.

During one encounter in the garage at the boy’s home, Franklin took off her clothes and asked the young boy, “Do you want to touch me?”

Other detailed accounts given in court revealed that when the boy visited Franklin’s home, she tied him to her bed, blindfolded him, and tickled him.

The court was told that she carried out several sexual acts, kissed him, and urged him to touch her. During one of these sexual encounters, Franklin even called out her husband’s name.

The victim carried the burden of this secret for many years before finally reporting the matter to the police in March 2024. During the trial, he explained how the painful memory had affected his entire growth and adult life.

In a statement read to the court, the victim shared: “My life has been shaped by what happened to me when I was a 9 year old boy.”

He added that the emotional pain from the abuse had remained “a constant shadow” over his life ever since it happened.

Prosecutor Gavin Pottinger explained to the jury how Franklin had taken advantage of her job. He told the court that she used the free access and deep trust given to her as a private teacher to repeatedly abuse the young boy over a long period.

Franklin denied all 8 counts of gross indecency brought against her. While giving evidence on the witness stand, she claimed she could not remember tutoring the boy at all. When asked directly by the prosecutor if she was lying or pretending not to remember the lessons, she replied, “No.”

Her defense lawyer, Aisling Byrnes, asked the court to consider Franklin’s background. She stated that Franklin had lived an “exemplary life” both before and after the period when the abuse took place.

The court heard that Franklin had continued working as a teacher for many years after the offences, while maintaining that she was completely innocent.

At St Albans Crown Court, Judge Choudhry delivered the final ruling and handed down the 7 year prison sentence. While giving the punishment, the judge spoke strongly about the harm caused by her actions, calling the offences a “profound abuse of trust.”

Along with her  7 year prison term, the court issued a 10 year Sexual Harm Prevention Order against Franklin. She has also been officially banned from ever working with or teaching children again for the rest of her life.
