Brazil President Lula da Silva has banned sports betting and online gambling apps right before the country’s main presidential election.
A major, surprising change has happened in Brazil as the government officially announced a complete ban on all sports betting websites and online gambling apps nationwide.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made this sudden decision just days before citizens go to the polls in a major presidential election in which he is running for another term.
The new order means that millions of people living in Brazil will no longer be allowed to put their money into betting sites or play gambling games on their mobile phones and computers.
The important announcement was made open to the public on Friday, September 25, 2026, at a big official event attended by top government leaders in the country.
During the meeting, the leaders explained that the government is shutting down the entire sports betting system to protect ordinary citizens and poor families who are losing all their hard earned money to gambling companies.
The president had previously called the gambling habit a terrible disease that was destroying many homes and driving regular working people into heavy debt that they could not pay back.
Explaining the new government rule directly to the public during the official event, Brazil’s Finance Minister, Dario Durigan, stated clearly, “It is no longer possible to deposit money into betting sites in the country”.
Warning everyone that all betting companies must stop their operations and adverts completely within a few days, Minister Dario Durigan added, “From that date, there will be no site, no application and no legal sponsorship of bets in the country”.
Speaking on how gambling was spreading fast into every home and making people poor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva explained the reason for his action by saying, “Society was left completely unprotected. The country brought the casino into people’s homes. It is in the kitchen, it is in the living room. There has to be oversight”.

The main reason why the president took this heavy action right now is that sports betting has grown so fast in Brazil that it has become a huge public health and money problem for many families.
Many reports showed that ordinary people were spending their food money and monthly salaries on sports betting apps instead of buying food and basic home needs.
In addition, many public opinion polls showed that almost all the citizens in Brazil wanted the government to stop sports betting completely.
Because the presidential election is happening on October 4, the president decided to listen to the people and stop all betting activities immediately.
However, big football teams in Brazil are very angry with this sudden ban because betting companies give them billions of money every year to sponsor their games and put company names on their football shirts.
One of the biggest football teams in Brazil, Flamengo, released an official statement complaining bitterly about the government’s action.
Complaining about how the sudden decision will destroy football club business, the management of Flamengo football club stated in their official message that the ban is a “heavy blow to Brazilian sports”.
Explaining why the government should not change rules overnight, the football club added, “Brazil spent years debating how to regulate sports betting. One cannot establish a rule, induce companies and institutions to make commitments based on it, and then, overnight, overhaul the entire regulatory framework”.
