The Nigeria Customs Service has been thrown into mourning following the killing of two officers in Kebbi State by suspected terrorists, an incident that has once again raised fresh concerns about growing insecurity around Nigeria’s border communities.
According to reports by Daily Post Nigeria, the tragic attack happened in Kebbi State where armed men believed to be terrorists stormed a Customs checkpoint and opened fire on officers who were on duty.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, expressed sadness over the deaths of the officers, describing the attack as painful and disturbing. He lamented the increasing dangers faced by security operatives working to protect the nation’s borders and combat smuggling activities.
Officers Reportedly Ambushed During operation
Reports indicated that the attackers launched a surprise assault on the officers, leaving little room for escape. The assailants were said to have opened fire heavily during the operation, leading to the deaths of the personnel.
Daily Post reported that the attack occurred amid intensified efforts by Customs operatives to clamp down on smuggling and criminal activities around border areas linked to terrorist movements.
The Customs boss explained that criminal groups and terrorists operating around border communities have become more aggressive in recent months. He noted that some smugglers are allegedly supplying fuel and other items to armed groups, making border operations even more dangerous for officers.
Growing Security Threat Along Borders
Speaking on the worsening situation, Adeniyi warned that terrorist groups, including suspected members of ISWAP and other armed gangs, are increasingly taking advantage of porous borders in parts of northern Nigeria.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies to tackle the rising threat and improve intelligence gathering in vulnerable communities.
The Customs leadership also revealed that efforts are being made to strengthen border surveillance through the deployment of additional operational equipment and improved patrol systems.

Authorities have appealed to residents living around border communities to support security agencies with useful information that could help expose criminal networks and prevent future attacks.
The Customs Service assured Nigerians that despite the tragic loss of its officers, personnel would remain committed to protecting the country’s borders and fighting illegal activities threatening national security.
The deaths of the officers have also sparked renewed conversations about the safety of security operatives who continue to work in high-risk areas across the country.
