Public commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticised the Federal Government’s tax reform plans, arguing that the authorities are more concerned about increasing revenue than addressing the challenges facing taxpayers.
Shehu said the proposed reforms could place additional pressure on Nigerians already grappling with rising living costs.
According to him, many households and businesses are struggling to cope with inflation, higher transport fares and the growing cost of essential goods. He therefore questioned the government’s decision to push ahead with measures that could increase the financial burden on citizens.
Shehu maintained that governments require revenue to provide public services. However, he stressed that tax policies should also reflect the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Shehu warned that some aspects of the reforms could create fresh difficulties for small businesses and low-income earners if they are not carefully implemented.
He further added that policymakers must strike a balance between revenue generation and the welfare of citizens. He argued that economic reforms should encourage growth and support struggling households rather than deepen existing challenges.
Meanwhile, discussions surrounding the government’s tax reform agenda have continued to attract reactions from different stakeholders.
While supporters believe the measures could improve revenue collection and strengthen public finances, critics fear the policies may place further strain on taxpayers at a time when many Nigerians are facing economic hardship.
As stated in daily post,Shehu said we need to think differently about the economy. Instead of just consuming and importing everything, he wants policies that push people to produce more, save, and invest in our own growth.
