The National Youth Service Corps mourns former Director General Colonel Peter Obasa, who died on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The management of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of one of its pioneer leaders, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa.
The former head of the youth scheme died on Monday, September 28, 2026. Following the sad news of his passing, the current Director General of the organization, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, led a delegation of top officers on an official condolence visit to the home of the deceased leader in Ilorin, Kwara State, to commiserate with his family members.
During the visit to the family residence in Kwara State, the current head of the youth agency paid rich tributes to the late military officer, describing him as a visionary leader who helped build the strong foundation that supports the youth corps today.
He pointed out that the late officer served as the third Chief Executive of the scheme from 1979 to 1984, a crucial period when the agency was expanding across the nation.
Speaking on the great work done by the late leader, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu stated:
“Colonel Obasa was a pioneering administrator and one of the principal architects of the NYSC, laying the groundwork for a robust administrative framework that has sustained the Scheme over the decades.”
The current leadership of the scheme explained that the structures put in place by the late leader helped millions of Nigerian university and polytechnic graduates serve their fatherland peacefully across different states over the past forty years.
The Director General noted that the achievements recorded during the five years when the late officer held power helped turn the youth program into a respected national institution that brings young people from different tribes together.
Family members of the late military officer expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of the youth agency for coming to support them during their period of grief.

A representative of the family thanked the visiting officers for remembering the good work done by their father many years ago and for standing by the family as they prepare for his final burial rites.
Speaking on behalf of the grieving family, the family spokesperson stated:
“We are profoundly grateful for your continued remembrance of him.”
