The United States government has pledged continued support to Nigeria in its efforts to end Fulani militant attacks in the Middle Belt region.
In a statement released on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the US Bureau of African Affairs commended Nigeria’s recent security response. The bureau urged authorities to maintain their momentum in protecting vulnerable communities, particularly in Plateau State.
“The United States commends Nigeria’s strong response to the latest attacks from Fulani militant groups,” the statement read. “We will continue to work with the Nigerian government to protect Christians in the Middle Belt. We urge Nigeria to continue the momentum and defend the Barkin Ladi communities in particular.”
This diplomatic backing comes amid a fresh wave of violence in Plateau State, where several deadly incidents have been reported in recent weeks.
According to reports from Christian Daily International and local sources, at least eight people were killed in attacks around the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area over the weekend of September 19 and 20. The victims included a Baptist pastor and a church employee who were ambushed while travelling to church services in Dorowa Babuje.

Another incident on September 19 saw five people ambushed in the Gana-Ropp area of the same local government. While conflict monitors noted that the specific religious motive for the attacks had not been independently established, local residents and community reports attributed the violence to Fulani militia groups.
The renewed attacks have drawn growing international attention to the security situation in Plateau State and the wider Middle Belt.
The United States emphasized that it would continue working closely with Nigerian authorities as they respond to the violence. The focus remains on protecting Christian communities in the region and ensuring the safety of residents in heavily targeted areas like Barkin Ladi.
As international attention grows, the US has made it clear that its partnership with Nigeria will remain focused on securing these at-risk areas. The goal is to ensure that the cycle of violence is finally brought to an end, allowing communities to live without the constant fear of attack.
