Fresh tension has hit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi openly rejected the outcome of the party’s presidential primary election that produced Atiku Abubakar as winner.
Amaechi described the results announced by the party as “concocted,” alleging that the exercise was marred by widespread voter disenfranchisement across several states in the country.
The former presidential aspirant, who contested alongside Atiku and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, made his position known in a statement shared through his verified X account shortly after the results were announced.
According to him, many party members who were supposed to participate in the voting process were allegedly denied the opportunity to cast their votes during the primaries held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Amaechi insisted that the process failed to reflect the true will of ADC members and supporters, stressing that he could not accept what he called an unfair and manipulated outcome.
In part of his statement, he said reports from different parts of the country showed that the exercise was plagued by irregularities, making the final results unacceptable to him and his supporters.
The development has now thrown the opposition party into uncertainty ahead of the 2027 general election, with political observers already predicting possible internal divisions if the crisis is not resolved quickly.
Meanwhile, supporters of Atiku have continued to celebrate his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, maintaining that the primary election followed due process.
The ADC leadership is yet to officially respond to Amaechi’s allegations as political reactions continue to trail the controversial primary exercise.
