Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described choosing Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election as the biggest mistake of his life.
He made the remark while speaking during an interactive session with young Nigerians. The statement has sparked fresh political discussions across the country.
According to Daily Post, Obasanjo spoke at an event held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He reflected on major decisions he made during his lifetime. He admitted that he had made several mistakes. However, he said selecting Atiku as his running mate remains the one he regrets the most.
The former president explained that no leader is perfect. He said mistakes are part of leadership and personal growth. He also noted that every decision carries consequences. Despite this, he believes God’s guidance helped him overcome many difficult moments in life.
