Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised the sharing of cash at a political event in Nasarawa State.
According to Daily Post, the cash was shared by Maryam Wadada, wife of APC governorship candidate Senator Ahmed Wadada, during an empowerment programme.
A video from the event has since generated reactions on social media. Reacting to the development, Yesufu questioned the practice of politicians distributing cash to citizens at public events.
She argued that Nigerians already spend their own money on basic services that government should provide. According to the activist, citizens pay for healthcare, education, security and other essential needs.
She therefore questioned the logic behind celebrating cash handouts while people continue to bear these expenses themselves. Yesufu said the situation could amount to Nigerians subsidising the APC government.
Her argument was that citizens spend their money on services that should receive adequate public funding. She also urged Nigerians to look beyond the immediate benefits of receiving cash from politicians.
The activist suggested that such gestures could create the impression that politicians are providing solutions to problems that require stronger government policies. Her comments have since sparked further discussion about political empowerment programmes and cash distributions.
Supporters of such programmes often describe them as direct assistance for people struggling with economic hardship. Critics, however, argue that political cash-sharing exercises can create dependency and distract from deeper governance issues.
The latest debate comes as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political parties and their supporters have stepped up grassroots engagements across different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, questions about accountability, public spending and the quality of governance remain major issues among Nigerians.
