Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has questioned Peter Obi’s chances of becoming Nigeria’s president in 2027.
Melaye argued that Obi still lacks the national political spread needed to win a presidential election. According to Daily Post, the former lawmaker described Obi as a “regional champion” while discussing the 2027 presidential race.
Melaye also questioned the ability of Obi’s political platform to compete effectively across the country. He pointed to the importance of having a strong national structure and candidates across different parts of Nigeria.
The former senator said Nigeria’s political history shows that regional popularity alone is not enough to secure the presidency. He referenced former leaders who struggled to win presidential elections when they operated mainly from regional political bases.
Melaye specifically mentioned former President Muhammadu Buhari as an example. He argued that Buhari eventually became president after joining forces with politicians to build a broader national platform.
He therefore believes Obi faces a similar challenge ahead of the 2027 election. Melaye’s comments come as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the next presidential election.
Obi remains one of the prominent opposition figures being discussed in connection with the 2027 contest. His supporters have continued to push for a stronger political alternative to the ruling establishment.
However, Melaye believes national acceptance and political structure will remain major factors in determining who can win the presidency. His position has also renewed the debate over whether popularity among voters can translate into victory without a strong political organisation across Nigeria.
With 2027 still ahead, the opposition landscape remains fluid. Several political figures and groups are already working to build alliances that could shape the next presidential contest.
For now, Melaye maintains that Obi must overcome the challenge of limited national political reach if he hopes to become Nigeria’s president.
The former lawmaker’s latest comments echo an argument he has made about Obi since the 2023 presidential election, when he also questioned the Labour Party candidate’s national spread.
