Banditry: Kebbi schools closed until security improves

Kebbi schools closed in communities affected by banditry will remain shut until security improves, the state government has announced.

The government said it will not reopen the affected schools until security agencies confirm that students, teachers and other school workers can return safely. It stressed that protecting lives remains its top priority.

The Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris, disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Thursday. He explained that the closure followed continued security threats in the affected communities.

According to the statement, the government will not risk the lives of students or teachers by reopening the schools too soon. Instead, it will wait until security agencies declare the areas safe for learning.

However, the government assured residents that it remains committed to restoring academic activities. It added that security efforts are ongoing across the affected communities.

Furthermore, officials warned against politicising the issue. They said the decision was based on security assessments and not political considerations.

Meanwhile, schools outside the affected communities will continue normal academic activities. The government also promised to keep reviewing the security situation before deciding when to reopen the affected schools.

Bandit attacks have disrupted education across parts of northwestern Nigeria in recent years. Consequently, several schools have remained closed to protect students and education workers.
