A rare and deadly mosquito-borne infection has struck the heart of Germany’s busiest travel hub, turning routine ground operations into an urgent public health investigation.
A Frankfurt Airport worker has died of malaria after a rare outbreak led to six employees contracting the serious infection.
German public health officials believe the infected mosquitoes arrived at the airport aboard an international flight.
The remaining five infected individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, according to a spokesperson for the airport operator, Fraport.
“Sadly, we must confirm that one employee has died as a result of the infection,” the Fraport spokesperson told reporters.
Mosquito traps have been installed across the airport grounds. Captured insects will be sent to a laboratory to determine their exact species and geographic origin.
“We have provided comprehensive information to all employees and encourage them to consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms,” the spokesperson added.
The initial report in July noted four infected workers. The total number of cases has since risen.

The Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s federal disease control agency, confirmed the workers fell ill between 4 and 6 July.
The institute warned that a lack of travel history can lead to delayed diagnosis. This delay significantly increases the risk of a severe or fatal course of the disease.
Malaria transmitted within a German airport is highly unusual. The last known case of “airport malaria” occurred in 2023, also at Frankfurt Airport.
While the disease is mostly found in tropical regions, this outbreak highlights the persistent, unseen risks of global air travel.
