His brother, David Himbara, told reporters that the family was kept entirely in the dark. “No one was allowed to see him in all these years,” he said, leaving them without answers or a final goodbye.
Byabagamba was arrested in 2014 alongside his brother-in-law, retired Brigadier-General Frank Rusagara. Their official crime was “spreading rumours” and tarnishing the government’s image. Throughout his trial, Byabagamba maintained his innocence, calling the charges entirely fabricated.
A military court initially handed him a 21-year sentence, later reduced to 15 years on appeal. But the timeline of his isolation is what draws the heaviest criticism. Human Rights Watch has repeatedly pointed to a flawed trial process, citing serious allegations of torture and witness tampering.

This is not the first time this pattern has played out. Rusagara died in prison just last year. At the time, rights groups described it as the “lonely death of a general,” noting his own family had not heard his voice since the days leading up to his 2014 arrest.
Byabagamba leaves behind a wife and two sons.
For the state, the official records will simply show a conviction for spreading rumors. But the lived reality for his family is a decade of enforced silence, raising uncomfortable questions about what truly happens to critics once the prison doors close.
