Court Says Jonathan Can Still Run for President in 2027

Court Says Jonathan Can Still Run for President in 2027

Fresh judgment sparks debate over former president’s political future.

A recent court ruling has stirred fresh political conversations across Nigeria after a Federal High Court reportedly declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The judgment, which has already started generating reactions from politicians, supporters, and legal analysts, centered on whether Jonathan is constitutionally allowed to seek another term after completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later winning a full election in 2011.

Why the Case Matters

The debate over Jonathan’s eligibility has existed for years. Some Nigerians believed the former president could no longer run because he had already spent nearly six years in office between 2010 and 2015.

However, the court reportedly ruled that Jonathan still has the constitutional right to contest again because his first period in office came after the death of Yar’Adua, not through a direct election.

According to the ruling, only a term won through an election should count fully under the constitutional two-term limit.

The decision has now reopened discussions about whether Jonathan may consider returning to active presidential politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political Reactions Begin to Surface

Although Jonathan has not publicly declared any intention to run for president, the judgment has already attracted attention within political circles.

Supporters of the former president see the ruling as a major development that could reshape the political landscape if he decides to contest.

Others, however, believe the matter may still face further legal interpretations or possible appeals, especially given how sensitive constitutional issues surrounding presidential tenure can be in Nigeria.

Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, has largely maintained a quieter political role in recent years, focusing more on diplomacy, democracy advocacy, and peace missions across Africa.

For now, the ruling simply means one thing: legally, the door to a possible 2027 presidential comeback may not be completely closed for the former Nigerian leader.
