The Federal Government has unveiled NYSC reform plans, marking the first major overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps since the scheme began 53 years ago.
According to Pulse Nigeria, the decision followed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. According to Pulse Nigeria, the reforms aim to modernise the scheme while preparing corps members for today’s job market.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the government wants the programme to do more than promote national unity. Instead, it will also strengthen entrepreneurship, digital skills and career development.
As part of the NYSC reform, the government will digitise key operations across the scheme. It will also improve security, upgrade orientation camps and enhance the welfare of corps members.
In addition, the six-week orientation course will receive a fresh structure. Corps members will take part in leadership training, civic education and practical skills programmes. They will also choose from 11 career pathways based on their interests and qualifications.
Furthermore, the government plans to amend the NYSC Act to support the new changes. The review will also improve deployment procedures while recognising professional skills gained during service.
The NYSC reform is expected to equip young Nigerians with relevant workplace skills and create better opportunities after service. However, some of the changes will take effect only after the necessary legal amendments receive approval.
