The Obidient Movement has criticised remarks suggesting that university graduates should sell akara and roasted corn to earn a living. It insisted that graduates deserve more after spending years pursuing higher education.
According to daily post, the group said there is dignity in every honest job, including trading and small businesses. However, it argued that graduates should not be pushed into those options because of a struggling economy and limited employment opportunities.
According to the movement, many young Nigerians attend university with the hope of building rewarding careers. It said encouraging them to settle for survival jobs does not address the country’s unemployment challenge.
Furthermore, the Obidient Movement urged leaders to create policies that support businesses, attract investment and generate sustainable jobs. It maintained that stronger economic growth would give graduates better opportunities to use their education and skills.
The group also said entrepreneurship should remain a choice rather than a necessity. In addition, it stressed that graduates deserve more than being forced into petty trading simply because jobs are scarce.
Meanwhile, the movement noted that Nigeria has the talent and resources needed to create meaningful employment. It argued that government efforts should focus on expanding opportunities instead of lowering expectations for young people.
The reaction followed comments encouraging Nigerians to consider businesses such as selling akara and roasted corn to make a living.
