A Kaduna couple detained by police is under investigation following the death of their teenage son, Sadiq, in an incident that has shocked residents of the community.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that the couple remains in custody while detectives work to determine what led to the boy’s death. The case came to light after concerned residents alerted authorities.
According to reports, the trouble began on Monday when Sadiq’s mother sent him to withdraw N5,000 from a Point of Sale (POS) agent. Later, the family discovered that two withdrawals had been made, although the teenager returned home with only N5,000.
His stepfather, Sharhabil, reportedly took him back to the PoS shop. There, the operator confirmed that two transactions had taken place. Following the discovery, the couple allegedly accused the boy of lying and beat him as punishment.
A neighbor said she heard Sadiq crying around 10 p.m. and pleaded with the couple to stop. However, they reportedly ignored her appeal.
The woman later informed a local Islamic cleric about the situation. The cleric visited the family and warned the couple against being too harsh. Nevertheless, residents said they refused to listen.
According to neighbors, Sadiq remained in that condition throughout the night. Where he was confirmed his death the following morning.
Police officers responded after receiving the report and immediately launched an investigation. As a result, detectives took the Kaduna couple into custody for questioning and began looking into the events that led to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, investigators have continued speaking with witnesses and reviewing available evidence. Medical personnel rushed the teenager to a health facility, where doctors confirmed his death. Authorities later moved his body to a mortuary for further examination.
Furthermore, detectives are gathering additional information to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Their findings will help determine whether the couple committed any criminal offence.
