Massive Chinese Rocket Turns into Fireball Shortly After Launch

A large Chinese rocket violently exploded just 85 seconds after takeoff, destroying the satellite it was carrying into space.

On Monday night, August 10, 2026, a routine journey to the stars ended in a dramatic and terrifying disaster. A massive Chinese space rocket suddenly blew up and turned into a giant glowing fireball just moments after it lifted off the ground. The explosion was so bright that people miles away could see a huge flash of light in the night sky, followed by burning pieces falling back to Earth.

The ill-fated rocket, known as the Long March 7A, blasted off at exactly 8:02 pm Beijing time. It began its journey from the Wenchang Space Launch Site, a very busy and famous spaceport located on the coast of southern China’s Hainan island. The giant machine was supposed to carry a special piece of equipment, called the ChinaSat-4B satellite, high up into space so it could orbit the Earth. Satellites like this one are like giant flying computers that help with things like military communications, television signals, and internet connections down on the ground.

However, things went terribly wrong very quickly. Just eighty-five seconds after the loud countdown finished and the rocket began climbing into the sky, it violently broke apart. Because it was still in the very early stage of its flight, the rocket was full of highly flammable fuel, which caused a massive explosion before it could even leave the Earth’s atmosphere. Amateur videos filmed by shocked onlookers and shared all over social media showed the rocket bursting into bright flames, followed by multiple glowing pieces of metal and debris falling dangerously back toward the ground.

Everyone is now asking the big question: why did this powerful machine explode? Right now, nobody knows the exact answer. Chinese space experts and government officials are working hard to figure out what caused the sudden disaster. Speaking about the terrifying event, China’s state news agency Xinhua stated that the spacecraft “encountered a flight anomaly shortly after launch, leading to the failure of the mission”. The news agency also confirmed to the public that “the cause for the failure is being ascertained”, meaning that scientists are carefully looking at computer data to see exactly which part of the rocket broke or stopped working properly.

During the first ninety seconds of any space launch, a rocket experiences the highest amount of pressure and stress as it pushes against the thick air around our planet. This high-speed pressure, combined with the extreme heat of the burning engines, means that any tiny crack or broken wire can lead to an instant disaster. Because of the extreme danger of falling rocket pieces, the local government had already warned airplanes to stay away from the coastal area before the launch even started. Thankfully, because the spaceport is located right next to the ocean, most of the dangerous flaming debris is believed to have fallen safely away from nearby towns and villagers.

This explosion is a surprising setback for the country, because the Long March 7A is usually a very strong and reliable rocket. It was built specifically to carry extremely heavy loads far out into space. Since it first started flying in the year 2020, it has only failed one other time, which was during its very first test flight. After that first mistake, the rocket returned to service in 2021 and completed a long streak of eighteen perfect trips to space. While the loss of this expensive rocket and satellite will force a pause, space engineers will closely study the wreckage and computer records so they can fix the problem and make sure the next launch is perfectly safe.
