The Nigeria Police Force has officially announced a comprehensive, three-day promotion examination for serving Superintendents of Police (SPs) seeking elevation to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP). The nationwide exercise is scheduled to take place from Monday, September 28, to Wednesday, September 30, 2026, across all state commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The directive, shared via a “Treat as Very Important” wireless message from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, stems from a formal schedule issued by the Police Service Commission (PSC). The Inspector-General of Police has directed all relevant commands, zones, and formations to promptly notify affected officers and ensure their reporting to designated headquarters for the assessment.
In preparation for the rigorous evaluation, police authorities have instructed candidates to thoroughly refresh their knowledge in core operational areas. The examination will heavily focus on Nigerian law, local acts, and advanced professional studies, reflecting the heightened legal, administrative, and strategic responsibilities inherent in the CSP rank.
To maintain the integrity of the process, the Force has mandated strict scrutiny of the participant lists, ensuring that only officially shortlisted officers are permitted to sit for the exam. State Commissioners of Police have been tasked with making all necessary logistical arrangements for the examination venues and providing full support to PSC officials deployed to oversee the exercise. Furthermore, commands must submit comprehensive reports on the conduct and outcomes of the examinations no later than Friday, October 2, 2026.
The announcement has already set in motion preparations across the country, with hundreds of officers identified for the exercise, including personnel from the Niger State Command such as SP Kabiru I. Dutse and SP Dan-Kury Lawal, and multiple candidates in the Ondo State Command, among many others nationwide.
As these officers prepare to face this critical assessment, the exercise represents far more than a mere administrative formality. It is a vital stress test of the Force’s middle-management cadre.
