Former spokesman of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, has said that Peter Obi remains the only Nigerian presidential candidate who publicly accounted for campaign spending after an election.
Tanko made the remark while speaking about Obi’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public service. He argued that the former Anambra governor has continued to stand out because of his willingness to openly explain how campaign funds were raised and spent.
Tanko Highlights Obi’s Record on Accountability
According to Tanko, accountability should not end after elections. He said political leaders must be ready to explain how campaign resources are managed.
He noted that Obi took the unusual step of publicly presenting details of campaign finances after the 2023 presidential election. Tanko described the move as a strong example of transparency in Nigeria’s political system.
Tanko added that many Nigerians continue to support Obi because they see him as a leader who promotes openness and responsible leadership.
Transparency Remains Key Political Issue
Campaign finance and accountability have remained important topics in Nigeria’s political space. Many observers believe greater transparency can help strengthen public trust in politicians and democratic institutions.
Tanko maintained that Obi’s actions set a standard that other political leaders should follow. He stressed that public office holders and candidates must embrace accountability if they want to earn the confidence of citizens.
Focus Shifts to 2027 Politics
The comments come as conversations around the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum across the country.
Supporters of Obi have repeatedly highlighted his record on transparency, while political stakeholders continue to debate the qualities needed in Nigeria’s next set of leaders.
With political activities gradually increasing ahead of 2027, issues such as accountability, governance and public trust are expected to remain at the center of national discussions.
