The South Korea 2030 moon landing plan aims to boost national tech capabilities with domestic launch vehicles and satellites.
South Korea unveiled an ambitious technology strategy on Wednesday, identifying seven core strategic projects spanning nuclear energy, quantum computing, aerospace and biotechnology to drive future economic growth beyond semiconductors and AI.
Announced at a Blue House meeting chaired by President Lee Jae Myung, the “Seven Major SEED” initiative sets key milestones for South Korea developing a domestic 100-qubit quantum computer by 2029, landing on the moon by 2030, and commercially deploying indigenous small modular reactors and brain-computer interfaces by 2035.
According to Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon, the seven target sectors encompass small modular reactors, fusion energy, next-generation renewables, quantum technology, aerospace, advanced biotechnology, and critical mineral and material supply chains.

The initiative comes as South Korea prepares for slowing long-term growth and intensifying global competition in critical technologies, which governments increasingly view as essential to both economic competitiveness and national security.
“We will help these seeds grow and build a South Korea that no one can rival in 10 or 20 years,” Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said.
