Why Tinubu’s New Homeland Security Appointment Matters for Nigeria”

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security structure and improving coordination among security agencies across the country.

The appointment was officially announced on Monday through a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume. The circular was transmitted by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Kana.

According to the Presidency, Fadewa was chosen because of his distinguished military career, strategic experience, and long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s national security framework. President Tinubu described him as a seasoned officer with the expertise required to help address the growing security challenges facing the nation.
The President explained that the appointment reflects his administration’s commitment to building a more effective and responsive internal security system. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among security institutions, noting that modern security threats require intelligence-driven operations and coordinated responses.
Tinubu stated that security agencies must work together more closely in order to protect lives, secure communities, and preserve national stability. He added that the government remains focused on improving the country’s security architecture through reforms, strategic planning, and better cooperation among relevant agencies.

“His appointment reflects our determination to build a more responsive and coordinated security framework capable of addressing emerging threats effectively,” the President stated.

Maj.-Gen. Fadewa (rtd.) is expected to advise the President on matters relating to homeland security, intelligence coordination, and strategic operations. His role will likely involve working with various security institutions to improve communication, response time, and operational efficiency in tackling insecurity across the country.
Nigeria has continued to face different security concerns in recent years, including terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, communal clashes, and attacks on communities in several regions. These challenges have increased calls for improved intelligence gathering and stronger coordination between military and civilian security agencies.
Analysts believe the appointment of Fadewa may be part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen the country’s internal security policies and improve the effectiveness of security operations nationwide. Experts have often argued that lack of coordination among agencies weakens responses to threats and delays intelligence sharing during emergencies.
The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that national security remains one of its top priorities. Since assuming office, President Tinubu has emphasized the importance of modern security strategies, technological support, and intelligence-led operations in combating crime and insurgency.

Those who observed also noted that appointing experienced military officers into advisory roles can help improve strategic planning and policy implementation, especially at a time when the country continues to battle multiple security issues simultaneously.

With his military background and experience in strategic operations, Fadewa is expected to bring valuable insight into the administration’s security agenda. Many Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the new appointment contributes to improving safety, restoring confidence, and strengthening the nation’s overall security system.

The appointment takes immediate effect, according to the circular released by the Presidency on Monday.
