The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate closure of the secretariat handling the sale of Federal Government houses in Abuja.
According to daily post, The move follows the dissolution of the committee previously responsible for the exercise.
The FCT Administration announced the development on Wednesday. It said the secretariat had remained active after the committee completed its assignment.
Wike has now directed that the secretariat should also be shut down. The decision means the former committee will no longer handle any matter concerning the sale of Federal Government houses in the FCT.
Instead, the responsibility will now be handled by a new division under the Department of Land Administration.
The new division will serve as the main point of contact for issues relating to the government houses. This includes enquiries and other matters connected to their sale.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
According to the statement, the committee had completed the work for which it was established. However, its secretariat continued to operate after the committee was dissolved.
That arrangement has now been brought to an end. For people dealing with Federal Government houses in Abuja, the process has now changed.
Members of the public are expected to direct their enquiries to the Department of Land Administration. They are no longer expected to deal with the dissolved committee or its former secretariat.
It urged members of the public not to fall victim to people who may still claim to represent the dissolved committee. The warning is important because property transactions often involve large sums of money.
Anyone who approaches prospective buyers while claiming to work for the former committee could therefore be acting without government authorisation. The administration advised the public to use the appropriate government channels instead.
The FCT Administration had previously raised concerns about the process used in selling Federal Government houses in Abuja.
In July 2025, the administration inaugurated a vetting committee to review the sales of government-owned houses.
Officials said the decision followed the discovery of several irregularities. These included improper verification, delayed payments and inadequate documentation.
The committee was expected to bring more order and transparency to the process. It was also expected to ensure that the sale of government houses followed the Federal Government’s original monetisation policy.
Wike’s latest directive now marks another change in how the government will handle the issue. Rather than keeping a separate secretariat for the dissolved committee, the FCT Administration has decided to move the responsibility into the Department of Land Administration.
The move is expected to provide a clearer channel for people seeking information about Federal Government houses in the territory. It also makes it easier for the administration to identify the government office responsible for such matters.
The FCT Administration has therefore urged residents to take note of the change. Anyone seeking information about the sale of Federal Government houses should now approach the Department of Land Administration.
The public has also been advised to avoid unofficial agents or individuals claiming to represent the dissolved committee. For prospective buyers, the message is simple: do not hand money or documents to anyone claiming to operate on behalf of the former committee.
The latest development brings the secretariat’s activities to a formal end and places responsibility for the housing matters under the FCT’s existing land administration structure.
