Police in Bauchi have arrested a woman, Hauwa’u Haruna, for allegedly killing her co-wife Jamila Adamu with a heavy wooden pestle.
Police officers attached to the C-Division in Bauchi State arrested a woman named Hauwa’u Haruna for allegedly using a heavy wooden pestle to hit her senior co-wife, Jamila Adamu, directly on the forehead.
The painful attack happened on Sunday afternoon inside the home they both share with their husband, leaving neighbors and family members in total shock.
Trouble started when a heated misunderstanding broke out between the two women inside their shared home. During the fight, the suspect grabbed a heavy wooden pestle, which is normally used for pounding food in the kitchen, and hit the older woman hard on her head.
The blow was so strong that the victim immediately collapsed to the ground, losing consciousness on the spot while bleeding heavily.
Concerned neighbors who heard the loud noise quickly called the local police officers stationed at the C-Division to come and help before things got worse.
Police detectives moved fast to the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the wooden pestle as evidence. The police team rushed the injured woman to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi for urgent medical care, but the doctors who examined her confirmed that she was already dead.
Confirming the tragic event in an official statement, the spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Habib, stated:
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the second wife, one Hauwa’u Haruna, 33 years old, allegedly acting under hallucinations, armed herself with a pestle and struck the first wife, one Jamila Adamu, 43 years old, on the forehead. Consequently, the victim fell unconscious.”
The police spokesman explained that the suspect appeared to be hearing strange voices or suffering from mental health issues when she carried out the attack.
To make sure that the full truth comes out and that justice is served, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be handed over to senior homicide detectives for further investigation.
Speaking on the next steps taken by the police leadership, SP Nafiu Habib added:
“The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and prosecution.”
The police boss also expressed his sympathy to the family of the woman who died and advised every family in the state to watch out for any relative showing signs of mental illness.

He urged people to quickly take their loved ones to the hospital or get help from medical experts whenever they see them behaving strangely, rather than leaving them at home where they could harm themselves or others.
Emphasizing the importance of getting medical help early, the police spokesman noted:
“The CP condoles with the bereaved family and cautions the public against domestic violence, while advising families to seek timely medical and psycho social support for members exhibiting mental health challenges.”
The body of the deceased woman has been placed in the hospital mortuary while medical doctors prepare to carry out a full test to confirm the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the suspect remains locked up in police custody, where she will remain until detectives complete their investigation and take her to court to face murder charges.
