INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan says the commission has no preferred party or candidate for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has once again promised all Nigerians that it will treat every political party and voter equally in the coming 2027 general elections.
The head of the electoral body, Professor Joash Amupitan, made this clear during an official visit to the palace of the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The visit was part of the ongoing efforts by the commission to meet key community leaders and test its voting machines well before the actual election day arrives across the country.
Addressing the traditional ruler and community leaders in the palace, the electoral boss explained that the commission is starting its work early so that everything will go smoothly when citizens go out to vote.
He stated that the organization is not waiting until the last minute to fix its voting equipment and plan how election materials will reach every village and city.
He emphasized that the main job of the commission is to guard the votes of the people and make sure that only the true choices of the citizens win the contest.
Reassuring the public that no candidate or political platform holds any special favor with the election organizers, Professor Joash Amupitan clearly stated:
“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria.”
The electoral chief explained that traditional rulers play a huge role in keeping peace in every community across the country.
He noted that when traditional rulers speak to their people, citizens listen, which makes them very important partners in making sure that elections happen without fighting or rioting.
He urged all traditional leaders to talk to the young people in their areas so that politicians do not use them to cause trouble during campaigns and voting periods.
Emphasizing that voting is a peaceful civic duty rather than a fight, the electoral leader advised politicians and their followers to avoid bad words and violence. Speaking on the need for peaceful conduct during campaigns, he said:
“Elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair, but as a peaceful expression of citizens’ choices.”
During the meeting, the host and ruler of Zazzau Emirate, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, thanked the electoral chairman for coming to inform the traditional council about their plans.

The royal father advised the commission to make sure that voting materials and workers arrive at voting centers on time on election day to avoid putting voters through hardship.
He also reminded the commission to test all electronic machines early enough so that they will not break down while people are queuing up to cast their votes.
The electoral chief reassured the monarch that all systems are being checked and tested far in advance to build strong public trust in the voting process.
