Aisha Yesufu Questions Why Abuja Still Has Fewer Lawmakers Than States

Activist Aisha Yesufu has raised concerns over the level of political representation given to residents of the Federal Capital Territory, saying Abuja deserves more seats in the National Assembly.

She said the FCT should have three senators and six members in the House of Representatives, arguing that people living in the nation’s capital should not be treated differently from citizens in other states.

According to Yesufu, Abuja has grown far beyond what its current representation reflects. She noted that millions of Nigerians live in the FCT, pay taxes, vote during elections, and contribute to the country, yet they still have limited voices at the National Assembly.

The activist, who recently expressed interest in the FCT senatorial race ahead of the 2027 elections, said equal representation is a matter of fairness and democracy.

Her comments quickly sparked conversations online, with many residents agreeing that Abuja’s political structure should match its population and importance in the country.
