Effective Date: August 2026
Publisher: ModernCrux
Website: ModernCrux.com
1. Our Editorial Commitment
ModernCrux is an independent digital news publication committed to providing accurate, timely, fair, and useful journalism to readers in Nigeria, Africa, and around the world. Our journalism covers technology, business, politics, world affairs, sports, entertainment, culture, and other issues of public interest. We are committed to journalism that informs the public, provides context, and contributes meaningfully to public discussion. Accuracy, fairness, independence, transparency, and accountability guide our editorial decisions.
2. Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy is a fundamental responsibility of every ModernCrux journalist and editor. Before publication, journalists must make every reasonable effort to:
Verify all important facts.
Confirm names, dates, locations, figures, and quotations.
Consult reliable and relevant sources.
Use primary sources whenever reasonably available.
Distinguish confirmed information from allegations, claims, and speculation.
Avoid publishing information simply because it is trending on social media.
Clearly identify information that has not been independently verified.
When information cannot be independently confirmed, the article must clearly communicate that limitation to readers.
3. Sources
ModernCrux requires journalists to use authoritative and relevant sources. Preferred sources include:
Government documents and official statements.
Court documents and regulatory filings.
Company announcements and academic research.
Interviews with qualified experts.
Direct eyewitness accounts.
Official statistics.
Reputable news organisations where appropriate.
When reporting information originally published by another media organisation, ModernCrux will provide appropriate attribution. Whenever possible, journalists must seek original or primary sources rather than relying exclusively on secondary reporting.
4. Original Journalism
ModernCrux aims to produce original reporting, interviews, investigations, analysis, and explainers in addition to breaking and general news. Our journalists are required to:
Conduct original interviews.
Contact relevant individuals and organisations for comment.
Examine primary documents.
Add local context to international stories.
Provide original analysis where appropriate.
Investigate matters of genuine public interest.
ModernCrux does not consider simply rewriting another publication’s article to be an acceptable standard of journalism. When a story is based substantially on reporting by another organisation, that source must be prominently acknowledged.
5. Attribution
ModernCrux believes readers must understand where important information comes from. Journalists will clearly attribute information obtained from:
Other news organisations.
Government agencies and companies.
Researchers, experts, and public statements.
Social media posts, documents, and reports.
Attribution must never be misleading or presented in a way that suggests ModernCrux independently obtained information when it did not.
6. Headlines
ModernCrux headlines must accurately represent the content of an article. We strictly prohibit misleading headlines, fabricated claims, or sensational language designed solely to generate clicks.
Headlines must:
Accurately reflect the story and avoid exaggeration.
Avoid presenting allegations as established facts.
Clearly distinguish opinion from fact.
Avoid deliberately misleading readers.
ModernCrux uses engaging headlines, but engagement will never come at the expense of accuracy.
7. Breaking News
Breaking news requires particular care because information may change quickly. Journalists covering breaking stories must:
Clearly identify what has been confirmed and the source of the information.
Avoid unnecessary speculation.
Update stories immediately when significant new information becomes available.
Correct inaccurate information promptly.
Clearly distinguish confirmed facts from developing reports.
Articles updated with new information must include an “Updated” timestamp.
8. Corrections and Updates
ModernCrux accepts full responsibility for correcting factual errors. When a published article contains a significant factual error, we will correct it as soon as reasonably possible.
The article must include a public correction or update note at the top or bottom of the page, explicitly explaining what was changed, when, and why.
Minor corrections (e.g., typos that do not affect meaning) may be corrected without a formal notice.
We will never secretly alter significant factual errors to conceal original mistakes (commonly known as “stealth editing”).
9. Right of Reply
ModernCrux mandates fairness when reporting allegations or serious criticism involving individuals, companies, or organisations. Journalists must give the subject of significant allegations a reasonable timeframe to respond before publication.
If a response is not received, the article must explicitly state that the organisation or individual was contacted and did not respond by the time of publication.
If a materially relevant response is received after publication, the article will be updated to include it.
10. Anonymous Sources
ModernCrux requires named sources wherever possible. Anonymous sources may only be used when:
The information is genuinely in the public interest.
The source has direct, first-hand knowledge of the matter.
Revealing the person’s identity could expose them to serious harm, retaliation, or legal jeopardy.
The information cannot reasonably be obtained through another source.
The use of any anonymous source must always be approved in advance by the Managing Editor or a designated senior editor. Journalists must not use anonymous sources to publish personal attacks, rumours, or unsupported accusations.
11. Social Media
Social media posts will not automatically be treated as verified facts. Before reporting information from social media, journalists must rigorously verify:
Whether the account is authentic.
Whether the information has been independently confirmed.
Whether the image or video is genuine, unedited, and current.
Whether the material has been taken out of context.
Viral content will never be published merely because it is trending.
12. User-Generated Content
ModernCrux may publish photographs, videos, statements, or other material supplied by members of the public. This material must be reviewed for authenticity and context before publication. Where appropriate, we will identify the original creator. We will never knowingly present user-generated material as original ModernCrux reporting.
13. Artificial Intelligence
ModernCrux may use artificial intelligence tools to assist with tasks such as transcription, translation, data organisation, and research. However, AI tools must never replace journalistic responsibility.
Journalists and editors remain wholly responsible for accuracy, verification, sourcing, context, fairness, and legal considerations.
AI-generated information must never be treated as automatically accurate.
ModernCrux will not knowingly publish fabricated quotations, invented sources, fake events, or fictional facts generated by artificial intelligence.
Where AI materially contributes to the final published text, imagery, or structure of an article, ModernCrux will clearly disclose its use to readers within the content.
14. Plagiarism
ModernCrux operates a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. Journalists must never:
Copy another publication’s article and present it as their own.
Copy another journalist’s work without attribution.
Reproduce substantial copyrighted material without permission or a legitimate legal basis.
Present another person’s reporting as original reporting.
Information obtained from another publication must be independently verified where possible and properly attributed.
15. Copyright and Images
ModernCrux uses images responsibly and lawfully. Editors and journalists must exclusively use:
Original photographs.
Properly licensed images.
Images supplied with explicit permission.
Public-domain material.
Images must never be deliberately manipulated in a misleading manner. Proper image credits are mandatory.
16. Privacy
ModernCrux respects individuals’ reasonable expectations of privacy. We will rigorously weigh the public interest before publishing private or sensitive personal information. Private information will not be published simply because it is sensational. Special care must be taken when reporting on children, victims of crime, and vulnerable individuals.
17. Children and Vulnerable People
ModernCrux exercises extreme caution when reporting stories involving children and vulnerable individuals. Journalists must consider the potential harm caused by publication and whether identifying information is genuinely necessary for a legitimate public interest. The fact that information is publicly available does not automatically justify republishing it.
18. Crime and Allegations
A person accused of wrongdoing will never be described as guilty prior to a formal conviction. ModernCrux rigorously distinguishes between an allegation, an arrest, a charge, a court proceeding, and a conviction. Journalists must avoid language that prejudges legal proceedings and must make reasonable efforts to obtain a response from the accused.
19. Political Coverage
ModernCrux covers political developments fairly, independently, and objectively. Political reporting must be based on verified facts and clearly distinguish between facts, political statements, analysis, and opinion. ModernCrux will not publish political content to favour or oppose any party, candidate, or ideology. Competing viewpoints must be represented fairly.
20. Conflicts of Interest
Journalists must formally disclose all relevant conflicts of interest to their editors. A journalist must never allow personal relationships, financial interests, political affiliations, business interests, or outside employment to improperly influence editorial decisions. Journalists are strictly prohibited from accepting payments or benefits in exchange for favourable coverage.
21. Gifts, Hospitality, and Sponsored Opportunities
To maintain absolute independence and prevent any perception of bias, journalists are strictly prohibited from accepting gifts, hospitality, paid travel, or other benefits exceeding a nominal value of $20 from organisations or individuals they cover.
Advertising, sponsored content, and paid partnerships must be distinctly labelled and separated from independent editorial content. Advertisers have no right to determine editorial conclusions.
22. Sponsored Content
Sponsored or paid content must be clearly and unambiguously labelled (e.g., “Sponsored,” “Advertisement,” or “Partner Content”). ModernCrux will never present paid promotional material as independent editorial reporting. Commercial relationships will never determine the outcome of independent journalism.
23. Advertising and Editorial Independence
ModernCrux maintains a strict firewall between advertising and editorial decision-making. Advertisers and commercial partners cannot purchase favourable editorial coverage. The decision to publish, edit, or remove editorial content rests solely on journalistic merit, never on commercial relationships.
24. Opinions and Commentary
Opinion pieces, columns, and commentary must be clearly labelled and distinguished from news reporting. Opinion writers are entitled to express strong viewpoints, but opinions must never rely on fabricated information or distorted facts. All factual claims in opinion articles must be supported by reliable evidence.
25. Use of Statistics and Data
Journalists must rigorously verify statistics before publication. When reporting statistics, journalists must provide sufficient context, including the source, the date, the methodology, what the figures represent, and any important limitations. Data must never be presented in a misleading manner.
26. Editorial Independence
ModernCrux’s editorial decisions are completely independent of political, commercial, and personal interests. No advertiser, sponsor, public official, company, political organisation, or individual can dictate independent editorial conclusions. ModernCrux will publish justified criticism of any entity when supported by responsible journalism and legitimate public interest.
27. Accountability
ModernCrux recognises that mistakes occur. Our strict responsibility is to:
Identify mistakes quickly.
Correct them promptly and transparently.
Explain significant corrections to our readers.
Learn from errors to improve our editorial processes.
Readers are actively encouraged to contact ModernCrux to report factual errors.
28. Reader Feedback and Complaints
Readers can contact ModernCrux with corrections, news tips, additional information, complaints, or suggestions. All editorial complaints will be reviewed fairly, independently, and promptly by the Managing Editor or a designated Standards Editor. If a reader disputes the outcome of a complaint, a clear escalation process will be provided to ensure full accountability.
29. Editorial Standards for Journalists
Every ModernCrux journalist is required to:
Tell the truth and verify all information.
Attribute sources clearly and avoid plagiarism entirely.
Respect privacy and avoid conflicts of interest.
Seek responses from subjects of serious allegations.
Correct mistakes transparently.
Protect confidential sources when approved by senior editors.
Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct.
30. Our Standard
ModernCrux operates by these standards:
Accurate journalism. Original reporting. Fair representation. Transparent sourcing. Independent editorial judgment. Responsible use of technology. Prompt corrections. Deep respect for readers.
Our goal is not simply to publish more stories; our goal is to publish journalism the world can trust.
