David Umahi says Peter Obi can’t face him or Tinubu

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi cannot match him politically or challenge President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to Punch, Umahi made the statement during an interview on ARISE Television. He dismissed claims that Obi poses a serious political threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The latest comments have drawn fresh attention to Umahi and Obi as political activities continue to gather momentum before the next presidential election.

“I want to assure you that nobody is afraid of Peter Obi. He can’t even face me, let alone face President Tinubu,” Umahi said.

The minister argued that Obi’s political influence has been overstated. Therefore, he maintained that the former Anambra State governor does not have the strength to defeat the APC in a presidential contest.

Umahi also criticised Obi’s performance as governor of Anambra State. He claimed the former governor failed to deliver key infrastructure projects during his administration.

According to Punch, Umahi said Obi did not build an airport or a seaport while serving as governor. He also alleged that many contractors were left unpaid after completing government projects.

In addition, the minister claimed road infrastructure received little attention under Obi’s administration. He argued that those shortcomings weaken Obi’s criticism of the current Federal Government.

The exchange involving Umahi and Obi comes as political parties and prominent figures begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Although campaigns have not officially started, public debate has continued to intensify.

However, opposition leaders have repeatedly criticised the Tinubu administration over the economy, insecurity and the rising cost of living. Those issues are expected to remain central to political discussions in the coming months.

Umahi defended the Tinubu administration and insisted the government is making steady progress in infrastructure development. He expressed confidence that Nigerians would recognise those efforts before the next general election.

Meanwhile, Obi has continued to urge the Federal Government to improve governance and tackle the country’s economic challenges. He has also called for policies that will reduce hardship and restore public confidence.

The latest exchange between Umahi and Obi reflects the growing political rivalry ahead of the 2027 general election as leading figures defend their records and challenge their opponents.
