Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command rescued four kidnapped victims after a fierce gun battle with suspected abductors in the Mpape area of Abuja.
The attack occurred at the Yellow House area of Mpape on Tuesday, July 8, 2026, at about 10:40 p.m. During the rescue mission, FCT police rescued four kidnap victims after tracking the suspects to their hideout.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, immediately deployed operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, officers from the Katampe and Mpape divisions, and personnel of the 24 Police Mobile Force Squadron to rescue the victims.
Preliminary investigations showed that the gunmen shot two residents before abducting four others. Medical personnel rushed the injured victims to the hospital for treatment.
Sadly, one of them, identified simply as Mr. Babangida, later died from his injuries. The second victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, is responding to treatment.
After receiving intelligence, police teams tracked the kidnappers through Jikoko Hills toward the Ushafa Forest. In the early hours of Thursday, July 10, officers located the suspects with the hostages.
However, the kidnappers opened fire, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire. The police overpowered the criminals and forced them to abandon the victims before fleeing into the surrounding hills and forest.
As a result, FCT police rescued four kidnap victims and reunited them safely with their families. No further injuries were recorded during the operation.
Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects. The command also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
In addition, the police said timely information from the public would strengthen the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the Federal Capital Territory.
