The UITH female doctor assaulted incident has sparked widespread concern after the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) explained how one of its doctors was allegedly attacked by the father of a child who later died while receiving treatment.
According to the hospital, the child’s father, identified as Emmanuel Olatunji, arrived at the Children’s Emergency Unit with his wife and their critically ill child.
However, he allegedly left the hospital for about two hours without providing money to purchase the admission pack required to begin treatment.
On humanitarian grounds, the female doctor paid for the admission pack from her own pocket to ensure the child received immediate medical attention.
Consequently, doctors and nurses began emergency treatment without delay in an effort to save the child’s life. Despite their efforts, the child died while receiving treatment in the ward.
After hearing about the child’s death, Olatunji reportedly returned to the ward. According to the hospital, he allegedly pounced on the female doctor and assaulted her.
Security personnel immediately arrested the suspect, while the injured doctor was taken for medical treatment.
Furthermore, UITH condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and a serious threat to the safety of healthcare workers.
The hospital stressed that doctors, nurses and other medical personnel dedicate themselves to saving lives and should never face violence while performing their duties.
Meanwhile, the hospital expressed sympathy to the bereaved family over the loss of their child. However, it maintained that grief should never result in violence against healthcare professionals.
The UITH female doctor assaulted case has renewed calls for stronger protection of healthcare workers across Nigeria.
As stated in daily post,In addition, UITH urged members of the public to cooperate with medical personnel during emergencies and allow them to carry out their duties in a safe environment.
