Escaped Nigerian drug dealer Tony Obina was caught again by Liberian security officers after breaking out of prison.
A Nigerian man named Tony Obina, who is also known in official court records as Obina Echezona, has been caught again by security officers in Liberia after he broke out of a prison cell and tried to run away.
Official security reports published on Monday, September 21, 2026, show that law enforcement officers from the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in Grand Gedeh County caught the escaped drug suspect during a well-planned search operation.
The suspect had previously escaped from legal custody where he was being held for trying to move large quantities of dangerous illegal drugs, including heroin, across national borders into neighboring Ivory Coast.
The main reason why security officers launched an urgent manhunt to catch Tony Obina is that he is considered a dangerous criminal who poses a big threat to public safety and law enforcement across the West African region.
He was first arrested by drug enforcement officers while carrying hard drugs worth hundreds of thousands of Liberian dollars, along with over one thousand five hundred US dollars in cash.
After his initial arrest, he managed to break out of his prison cell to avoid standing trial in court. However, security agencies set up roadblocks and worked together with local community members to track his movement, leading to his quick arrest before he could cross the border out of the country.
Explaining how the escaped criminal was tracked down and caught by security officers, official spokespersons from the drug enforcement agency gave clear statements to the public.

Describing the successful operation to bring the suspect back into custody, security representatives stated, “The suspect was caught following a well-coordinated search operation by our officers after he escaped from lawful custody”.
Warning all criminals that security officers will not allow anyone to break the law and run away freely, the agency official noted, “We remain committed to stopping all forms of illegal drug business and ensuring that anyone who breaks the law faces justice in court”.
Appealing to everyday people in the community to help law enforcement keep the towns safe from hard drugs, the agency added, “We urge the public to support the fight against illicit drug trafficking by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station”.
Tony Obina has been taken back into a heavy security prison cell. He is now facing extra criminal charges for breaking out of prison in addition to his original drug trafficking charges, and he will be taken straight to court for his trial.
