Former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, has reportedly been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after his recent conviction in a high-profile corruption case involving billions of naira.
The arrest followed a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja which sentenced the former minister to 75 years imprisonment over allegations connected to the laundering of about N33.8 billion meant for power projects across the country.
Reports said security agencies began tracking Mamman after he failed to appear in court for sentencing, forcing the court to issue an arrest order against him.
Funds Meant For Power Projects Allegedly Diverted
During the trial, prosecutors accused the former minister of diverting public funds linked to the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric projects through several suspicious transactions and private companies.
Justice James Omotosho eventually found him guilty on multiple charges related to conspiracy and money laundering after months of court proceedings.
The case has attracted nationwide attention due to the huge amount involved and the importance of the projects to Nigeria’s struggling electricity sector.
Nigerians React To Development
Following news of the arrest, reactions quickly surfaced online, with many Nigerians describing the development as a major step in the fight against corruption.
Some citizens also expressed hope that more public officials accused of mismanaging government funds would face proper investigation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the EFCC is expected to continue efforts to recover assets allegedly connected to the case as authorities move to enforce the court’s judgment against the former minister.
