The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to participate in its upcoming presidential primary after granting him a waiver.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday during the party’s screening exercise in Abuja, where PDP leaders explained that Jonathan’s political background and years of public service made additional scrutiny unnecessary.
Speaking on behalf of the screening panel, former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu said Jonathan had already built an extensive record in government, having served as deputy governor, governor, vice president and later president of Nigeria.
According to him, the committee considered Jonathan fully qualified for the race and decided there was no need for a lengthy screening process before allowing him into the contest.
The waiver now clears the former president to move ahead in the PDP’s presidential primary as preparations for the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.
Political observers believe the move could strengthen the PDP ahead of the elections, especially as the party continues efforts to rebuild internal unity after recent political setbacks.
Jonathan’s possible return to frontline politics has already generated reactions from party supporters and political analysts across the country, with many watching closely to see how the PDP’s presidential race unfolds in the coming months.
