Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu’s doctor, Professor Martin Aghaji. He also urged security agencies to uphold the rule of law and respect due process.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, Obi described the incident as disheartening. He maintained that no Nigerian should face arrest in a manner that disregards due process. He added that the law should protect every citizen.
The former Anambra State governor alleged that security operatives arrived at Aghaji’s residence in Enugu’s Independent Layout around 2 a.m.According to him, they arrested the 74-year-old professor in the presence of his visiting daughter. Obi said the operatives neither invited nor notified him beforehand.
Obi further claimed that the operatives took Aghaji to Lagos. He said the professor remained in custody for three days. However, authorities later released him. They also reportedly apologised after admitting that the arrest was a mistake.
Describing Aghaji as an internationally respected surgeon, accomplished academic and elder statesman, Obi said the treatment fell below democratic standards.
He insisted that security agencies must respect the rights and dignity of every citizen while carrying out their duties.
He also warned that intimidating respected professionals could weaken public confidence in government institutions. According to Obi, such actions may worsen the migration of skilled workers, especially in the health sector.
Meanwhile, Obi recalled a similar incident involving a medical practitioner in Akwa Ibom State.
He noted that the development almost resulted in a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Medical Association. However, the matter was eventually resolved.
According to daily post,He therefore urged security agencies to conduct their operations professionally. He also asked them to act within the bounds of the law.
