The Labour Party running mate for the 2027 presidential election is Hajja Bintu Konto. The party unveiled her on Saturday as the vice-presidential candidate to partner with its presidential flag bearer, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.
According to daily post,the announcement came through a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa. He said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the party.
According to Asogwa, the Okereke-Konto ticket reflects the party’s commitment to competence, integrity, patriotism and inclusive leadership. He added that the combination offers Nigerians a credible leadership team ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party described the Labour Party running mate as a public health expert, humanitarian leader and development practitioner. It said she has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare delivery, humanitarian intervention and community development.
Labour Party also highlighted Konto’s work in conflict-affected communities across northern Nigeria. According to the statement, she has supported vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons, through several humanitarian programmes.
Before retiring from Catholic Relief Services, Konto served in several leadership positions. She coordinated engagements with government agencies, traditional rulers, civil society groups and local communities on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and humanitarian projects.
Furthermore, the party said Konto’s nomination reinforces its commitment to gender inclusion and national unity. It noted that her leadership experience and multilingual background make her a strong addition to the presidential ticket.
Labour Party said Konto is a trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. She is also the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
The party expressed confidence that the Okereke-Konto ticket can help rebuild national institutions, improve security, revive the economy and deliver responsible governance. It also urged Nigerians to support its candidates as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.
With the unveiling of Hajja Bintu Konto as the Labour Party running mate, the party says it is presenting a leadership team focused on competence, inclusion and national development ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
