Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Resign or Drop 2027 Re-election Bid Over Insecurity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign or abandon his 2027 re-election bid.

He said the country’s worsening insecurity shows the current administration has failed to protect Nigerians. Obi argued that no leader should seek another term after failing to guarantee citizens’ safety.

According to Daily Post, Peter Obi made the statement while reacting to the rising wave of killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks across the country. He said protecting lives and property remains the primary duty of every government. Therefore, any administration that fails in that responsibility should accept full accountability.

Peter Obi said many Nigerians now live in fear because armed groups continue to attack communities. He noted that several families have lost loved ones, homes, and businesses. Moreover, many residents now struggle to carry out their daily activities without fear. He added that repeated promises from the Federal Government have not brought the expected results.

The former Anambra State governor also recalled President Tinubu’s criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan before the 2015 election. At the time, Tinubu repeatedly blamed Jonathan for the country’s security challenges. Likewise, Peter Obi said the same standard should now apply to the current administration. He insisted that leaders must accept responsibility when they fail to deliver on their promises.

Furthermore, Peter Obi maintained that President Tinubu should either resign or drop any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election. He said remaining in office while insecurity continues to worsen would send the wrong message to Nigerians. Instead, he urged the President to put the country’s interests above personal political ambition.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi’s comments have sparked fresh political reactions ahead of the 2027 general election. Supporters and critics have continued to debate his position on social media and other public platforms. However, insecurity remains one of Nigeria’s biggest concerns. As a result, the issue is expected to dominate political discussions in the months leading to the next election.
