Police Arrest Two Over Alleged Fake Kidnap Plot to Extort ₦4 Million

The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men after uncovering an alleged plot to stage a fake kidnapping and demand a ₦4 million ransom from one suspect’s relatives. Investigators say intelligence gathering exposed the scheme before the suspects could collect any money.

According to the police, operatives of the Igarra Division arrested Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37. Both men are from Uneme Akpama Community in Edo State. Investigators acted on credible intelligence. They tracked the suspects and disrupted the alleged scheme.

Police said the incident began on June 23, 2026. Enahoro allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives several times. He falsely claimed that kidnappers had abducted Alabi. He then demanded a ₦4 million ransom for Alabi’s release. However, investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies. They immediately launched a discreet investigation.

As the investigation continued, detectives gathered more evidence and uncovered the alleged deception. The suspects later admitted their roles during questioning, according to the police. As a result, officers took both men into custody for further investigation.

The Edo State Police Command said it will arraign the suspects after concluding its investigation. In addition, the command warned residents against staging fake kidnappings or engaging in any form of fraud to obtain money from unsuspecting relatives.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police praised the officers involved in the operation. He commended their professionalism and swift response. He also urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that will help security agencies prevent crime across the state.

The command stressed that anyone who plans a fake kidnapping will face the full weight of the law. It added that the same penalty applies to anyone who participates in the crime.
